Staying Up-to-Date in the Classroom

Each Monday, your child will come home with a newsletter for the week.  This newsletter will consist of upcoming events, curriculum focus, and good-to-know information.  You can find this newsletter in your child's T.I.G.E.R. Notebook!

The T.I.G.E.R. notebook will also contain weekly:

  • homework
  • fluency passage
  • sight words / challenge vocabulary builder
  • reading log (to be filled out Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday)
  • any handouts concerning field trips, seasonal parties, school events etc. . .

Students will have homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday night of each week.  Wednesday night is what we call "Family Night."  Students will not have homework so they can spend quality time with their families, but they will still be required to do nightly reading.  It is the student's responsibility to turn in their homework on the appropriate day.  I realize emergencies arise: however, missing homework may result in a loss of some recess time in order to make up the assignment.  Homework should take approximately 20 minutes to complete.  If it is taking longer on a consistent basis, we will need to meet to determine the cause of the problem and possibly make accommodations.  Please contact me at school or through E-mail ( if you have a question or concern throughout the year.

Your child will be coming home with a notebook each night.  The notebook will contain a menu, weekly newsletter/homework, parent communication page, spelling words, sight words, fluency page, and a reading log.  The idea of the TIGER notebook is to help your child with organization and build responsibility.  Please read the Second Grade Handbook located in the notebook pocket.  This explains each component of the assigned homework (with a few helpful suggestions).
